Police officers have taped off a main road following a collision, blocking the main route from Whitefield to Bury. Cordons are in place throughout the area and traffic is building amid reports that a pedestrian has been injured.
The Manchester Evening News understands that the crash took place at around 12.20pm this afternoon, April 8, at the junction of Radcliffe New Road and Bury New Road in Whitefield. Witnesses claim to have seen a man, believed to be a pedestrian 'lying on his back', 'conscious and talking' to bystanders. Police confirmed that 'no-one was seriously injured'.
Greater Manchester Police remain at the scene of the incident. Closures are in place along Bury New Road from Stanley Road to Radcliffe New Road.
There is heavy congestion on the approach to the area, with queues as traffic diverts onto Church Lane and Dales Lane - Mather Avenue and Rufford Drive area also congested. There are also roadworks in the area, outside the Goats Gate pub, not helping delays.
"Officers are currently responding to a collision on Elms Square, Whitefield," said a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police. "Road closures are in place and drivers are asked to avoid the area."
Residents in the area say the closures, combined with rush hour traffic, is continuing to lead to major delays some five hours after the collision. The 'quarter of a mile' section taped off is causing 'bumper to bumper queues', described as 'chaos' by passers-by.
