Police statement after crash which closed A46 in Newark for hours

Two people have been left with what police described as 'potentially life-altering injuries' following a crash which closed the A46 in Newark for most of the day. Officers were called to the collision, which involved two cars, just before 9am on Friday (August 26).

The road was shut for hours between the A617 for the Cattlemarket Roundabout to the A1 for the Newark Showground / Air Museum turn off. Motorists have been advised on diversions, with the crash having caused congestion on all the major routes through Newark. The A46 reopened on Friday evening.

In an update, police said the two aforementioned people were receiving treatment in hospital. And officers have asked witnesses to come forward in a public appeal for information.

Detective Constable Andy Fawcett, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “There will have been some motorists who saw this incident happen, due to it taking place on a busy road during rush hour. Two people were seriously injured in this collision, so it’s extremely important that any witnesses come forward with any information they have.

“We’d also like to review the dash-cam footage of anyone who drove on the A46 near Newark at this time, particularly lorry drivers who were in the area." Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101, quoting 141 of August 26 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
