A man is dead after shootouts with police who used an armored vehicle to enter a garage south of Denver at a home in Englewood where he had barricaded himself, police announced Wednesday morning.
A standoff over several hours Tuesday afternoon led to the shootout in the 4100 block of South Cherokee Street, Englewood police said in a news release.
Denver police with a “high-risk search warrant” had been attempting to arrest the man at the house on Tuesday afternoon when he barricaded himself and fired repeatedly at officers, who returned fire, police said.
An Englewood police SWAT team responded at 2:45 p.m., and police at 3:10 p.m. issued a “shelter-in-place” order to residents in the surrounding area, police said. Arapahoe County Sheriff‘s deputies and the Littleton Police Department provided assistance.
Around 5:16 p.m., police evacuated the area and deployed drones, a bomb squad robot, and gas in their efforts to subdue the armed man inside, police said. “The suspect failed to surrender.”
SWAT officers drove an armored vehicle and used it to enter a garage at the house. This led to a second exchange of gunfire, police said. The man was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation of whether the use of force was justified has begun under the guidance of the 18th Judicial District, authorities said.
