Around 100,000 suspected counterfeit cigarettes, thought to be worth around £80,000, were seized after police stopped a van. The suspicious van was heading south on the A1 shortly after 11.30am on Monday, March 14.
Nottinghamshire Police pulled behind the vehicle after it had passed the Coddington junction and worked to box the van in, using marked and unmarked vehicles, and safely brought it to a stop. Investigations are ongoing.
Inspector David Mather, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This positive result was thanks to some excellent work between different teams and shows we will continue to proactively stop vehicles believed to be involved in criminality.

“Officers from armed response, roads policing, tactical support group, dogs and the road crime team worked together to ensure a safe conclusion and the confiscation of illicit goods. The A1 corridor is used by criminals travelling through Nottinghamshire and stops like this one send a clear message that we do not want them on our roads.”
Notts Road Policing Unit said in a tweet earlier this week: "Great bit of team work with Ops support today. Got this vehicle stopped for HMRC on the A1 today. 100,000 fake cigarettes recovered."
