Police search scene of stabbing as kids make their way back to school

A trail of evidence markers mapped out a route two suspects made after slashing and stabbing a teenager in a vicious attack.

A large police cordon stretched around a section of Everton Park and a path leading down to Home Bargains, off Great Homer Street, this morning (June 5) following the attack late last night. Merseyside Police was alerted to the incident following a report from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) at around 11.30pm yesterday, Sunday, June 4.

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed by two males on bikes following a verbal argument. The victim sustained a slash wound to his face and two stab wounds to his body. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

At around 10am a police scientific support van arrived at the scene and three forensic officers entered the police cordon. The officers took pictures and put down dozens of yellow markers mapping out an apparent evidence trail. The yellow evidence markers began near the beginning of the path next to Home Bargains and stretched around 200 yards into Everton Park.

The ECHO understands this to be the route taken by the two suspects as they fled the scene after the senseless attack. A police spokesperson said the two suspects rode off towards Courtier Close, a road on the opposite end of the park.

When the ECHO arrived at the scene shortly after 8am the surrounding area was a hive of activity as children returned to school after the half term break. Groups of teenagers and young children escorted by parents and relatives walked past the cordon and stopped to watch the police activity.

One mum said: "The world we live in is so frightening - knife crime is getting out of control. I hope the boy is going to be okay." Speaking regarding the incident, Detective Inspector Emma Murphy urged people to speak to their children and family members about the dangers of knife crime.

DI Murphy said: "Whilst we are making positive progress, we understand the devastating consequences of carrying a knife and are relentless in our approach to targeting and pursuing criminals. The use of knives and any weapons is reckless and will not be tolerated, and can have tragic consequences, not only for the victim and their family but also for the offenders involved...there is no place for knives in our communities."

Merseyside Police confirmed an investigation had been launched and CCTV and forensic enquiries are being carried out in the local area. DI Murphy said the investigation was in the early stages and police were trying to establish the chain of events, but anyone in the vicinity of Great Homer Street who saw or heard anything should come forward with information.

She said: "I also urge people in the area to check your CCTV and dashcam footage to see if it has captured any footage, no matter how small, as any information may help with the investigation."
