Police search for Gold Coast hit-and-run driver after woman left in critical condition at Southport

Gold Coast police are appealing to the driver involved in a hit-and-run incident overnight to surrender immediately.

A 62-year-old woman is in an induced coma after being hit by a car in Southport around 10:45pm.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage, which showed the driver of the white Audi sedan stopping momentarily after hitting the woman, but not leaving the car.

She was dragged underneath the vehicle for 30 metres down Marine Parade, according to Inspector Scott Knowles from the Gold Coast District Central Patrol Group.

"She was simply walking down Marine Parade and as she was crossing ... the vehicle has come from behind her," Inspector Knowles said.

"As the driver has negotiated the round-about, she was struck and caught up underneath the vehicle."

Inspector Knowles said the driver showed a "callous disregard" for the woman.

"She has suffered severe injuries," he said.

"She is unconscious with some serious injuries to the head, internal and limbs."

'Surrender yourself'

Passersby called paramedics after discovering the woman in the middle of the road.

The woman was conscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor William Houghton said an ambulance was en route within two minutes of the call.

"Time is of the essence, especially for this patient," he said.

"She has had the best opportunity for treatment that she could possibly get."

Investigators are trawling through council CCTV footage to determine where the vehicle came from and where it may have gone.

"We are looking for a white Audi sedan, possibly with some damage to the front of the vehicle, last seen heading south down Marine Parade," Inspector Knowles said.

"My suggestion [if you are the driver] is surrender yourself, put yourself into a police station.

"We will identify you, we will locate you."

Police are appealing to members of the public with CCTV or dashcam footage, or any knowledge of the incident, to come forward.
