Police investigating an alleged sexual assault that saw a cycle path closed in Renfrewshire have this afternoon confirmed “no crime has taken place”.
It comes just hours after the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Division shared an appeal saying a 41-year-old woman had been the victim of a “serious sexual assault” on the National Cycle Route 75 between Linwood and Bridge of Weir.
The Paisley Daily Express reported the path had been shut yesterday by police, between Sandholes Road and Brookfield Village Park, with officers stationed at both entrances while investigations were conducted.
At the time, police said they were investigating a serious sexual assault, of which they had been made aware on Tuesday, December 27.
Earlier today, they released an appeal for information with the description of a man they were looking for in connection with an incident which was said to have happened on Wednesday, December 21 between 10pm and 11pm.
However, they have now issued another statement which says their enquiries have generated a conclusion that no criminality has been established.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following our earlier appeal for information on a report of a serious sexual assault in Linwood on Wednesday, December 21, it has been established that no crime has taken place.
“Thank you to those who shared our earlier appeal.”
