Police return gunfire at alleged car thieves in Toowoomba, hunt for offenders

Shots have been fired at police in a dramatic incident involving a suspected stolen car in Toowoomba on Queensland's Darling Downs. 

Just before 2:00pm, officers spotted a suspected stolen SUV at Harristown.

One of the occupants starting shooting, hitting the police car, and officers returned fire as the car sped away.

Police said a man later turned up at Toowoomba Hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, which officers believe is linked to the incident in Harristown.

No police officers have been injured.

Police established a number of crime scenes in the Harristown area last night.

Officers are yet to locate the stolen car and are looking for the other offenders.

There is no further information at this time.
