Police response near Temple Meads after 'football fans threw bottles and swung punches'

Rival football fans allegedly clashed in Bristol yesterday, with footage showing a group of people surging towards an alleyway near Temple Meads as police sirens sounded. A witness claims ugly scenes developed in the city centre yesterday (April 1) after around 200 fans got off the train ahead of Bristol City's match against Reading.

The large group is said to have become embroiled in a fracas at around 1pm in an alleyway opposite the station. A video shows a police car arriving at the roadside and an officer running into the alleyway, with the group quickly dispersing.

The footage was captured by Ricky Tomlison from Keynsham, who was in the area waiting to meet his brother. Ricky, 35, reported: “The Reading fans poured off the train and as they came across the road another group of fans appeared from a side alley.

“The Reading fans had their hands up and were chanting. They saw the group come out of the alley and charged at them. They were throwing bottles and swinging punches at each other.

“It was pretty wild. There were a couple of older ladies walking along the pavement and they sheltered in the doorway of the pub.

“It was quite intimidating to watch. But the police were on scene quickly and the group dispersed and ran off."

Bristol City and Reading drew the match one all. Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for further details about the alleged clash near Temple Meads.
