POLICE have released images as part of a public appeal for information as they investigate an alleged assault on a Newcastle to Sydney train.

Police are trying to identify the person shown in the CCTV footage released on October 29 as they believe he may be able to help with their ongoing inquiries.

Police are investigating an alleged assault on a woman who was a passenger on a Newcastle to Central train as it approached Gosford train station at about 3.40am on Monday, October 21.

The inquiries relate to an alleged touching incident, according to police.

The man appears in the publicly-released images to be wearing a grey cap with a symbol on the front, a grey collared t-shirt, and a black jacket.

Police have urged anyone with information, or who recognise the man shown, to contact Gosford Police Station.

They can also contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the confidential online reporting portal, quoting reference number E82499319.
