Police officer who harassed ex-girlfriend with unwanted letters and calls walks free

A policeman who subjected his ex-partner to a campaign of domestic abuse lasting months has walked free from court without punishment.

Andrew Caulfield harassed his former girlfriend and colleague Amanda Watson for nine months after she dumped him.

The 47-year-old admitted carrying out the sustained abuse and defying a court order to stay away from her after he was initially arrested.

But Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown did not impose any punishment, noting the defendant had kept out of trouble for two years.

Dundee Sheriff Court was told that Caulfield, who has been a Dundee-based PC for many years, would lose his job with Police Scotland as a result of his conviction.

Sheriff Martin-Brown imposed a two-year non-harassment order on the disgraced officer after being told PC Watson wanted continued protection from him, reports the Daily Record.

She told him: "It is clear this was your first offence, and given it happened in 2021, and you have been of good behaviour for two years, you will be admonished."

Solicitor Kris Gilmartin, defending, said: "He will lose his employment following today's hearing."

Caulfield admitted engaging in a course of abusive behaviour towards Ms Watson, while she was his partner or ex-partner, between July 12, 2020 and April 7, 2021.

Caulfield, from Dundee, ignored his former girlfriend's pleas to leave her alone and refused to take no for an answer when she told him their relationship was at an end.

He admitted "acting in a coercive and controlling manner towards Amanda Watson."

The shamed officer had originally faced a charge of abusing her for two years including striking her with a door, grabbing her and trying to pull her off a bed.

But after discussions with the Crown, his guilty plea to a reduced charge covering a shorter period of time was accepted ahead of his scheduled trial date.

Caulfield admitted a lengthy charge and accepted he had refused to accept the relationship was at an end, and repeatedly phoning, texting and emailing PC Watson despite her telling him she wanted no contact.

He admitted repeatedly turning up at her home uninvited and placing a number of cards and letters through her letterbox.

The cyber-crime specialist admitted warning her friend Andrew Thomson to stop contacting her and accepted he had an unwanted card delivered to her home in the city.

Caulfield also pled guilty to a second charge of breaching a court bail order which had been imposed at Dundee Sheriff Court on July 14, 2020.

He admitted ignoring the court order for more than two months by failing to comply with a condition to stay away from PC Watson between August 29 and November 12 2020.

The court was told that he had repeatedly contacted his colleague by phone and instant message and had met her on a number of occasions.

Incidents relating to six other locations in Meigle, Perthshire, and Dundee, were removed from the charge. It was originally alleged the abuse began on June 1 2019.

He was cleared of leaving a set of keys to his home on his victim's car, and repeatedly having flowers and cards delivered to her property.

He was cleared of causing a door to strike her on the body, acting in an aggressive manner towards her, shouting at her, and grabbing her by the body and trying to pull her off a bed.

Caulfield was also cleared of repeatedly following 35-year-old PC Watson and threatening to harm himself.

A force spokesperson said: "Police Scotland fully investigates all reports of violence against women and girls irrespective of who the perpetrator is.

"We are committed to continuing to work with our partners and support the right of women and girls to feel safe. We continue to review and refresh our strategy to tackle violence against women and girls in Scotland."
