A tragic accident occurred in the German city of Stuttgart on Monday, resulting in the death of a 61-year-old police officer who was part of the security escort for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The incident took place as Orbán was en route to the airport following Hungary's victory over Scotland in a Euro 2024 match.
The Hungarian prime minister was unharmed in the accident and proceeded to Stuttgart Airport as planned. However, the officer was critically injured in the collision and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Another officer, aged 27, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
The collision happened around 11:15 a.m. when a 69-year-old BMW driver attempted to turn onto a closed road that was part of the police escort's route. Failing to notice the roadblock, the driver collided with the officer's motorcycle, causing it to crash into the other officer's motorcycle due to the impact.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event, Police Commissioner Markus Eisenbraun stated, 'We are deeply shocked by the accident involving our colleague. The entire Stuttgart police force is profoundly saddened by the circumstances surrounding the death of our esteemed colleague.'
Eisenbraun extended condolences to the deceased officer's family, relatives, and friends, while also sending best wishes for a swift recovery to the injured officer. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, highlighting the importance of road safety and vigilance during security operations.
