Police officer convicted of assaulting newborn child

A police officer has admitted assaulting his newborn and has been stood down.

Nickolas Wayne Peake, 30, was charged with attacking his five-week-old baby on Saturday.

The child was taken to Perth Children's Hospital as a precaution.

Peake faced Midland Magistrates Court in suburban Perth on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

He was convicted.

The case returns to the same court on October 13 for sentence.

Child Abuse Squad detectives charged the officer on Sunday, with WA Police confirming on Thursday he had been stood down from duty.

AAP has contacted WA Police Minister Reece Whitby's office for comment.
