There was much confusion and panice last night after a loud bang "shook" homes across Merseyside.

The loud noise woke some residents in the middle of the night as people began to speculate what the noise could have been.

Residents in Liverpool were quick to take to social media to express their concern and confusion.

One person said it was "really scary, I've never heard anything like it before" and another added "people's houses were shaking".

Another person said it was "unnerving" and their "flat shook" near the Albert Dock, as many residents were woken up by the mystery sound.

The "huge explosion sound" was heard around right across Merseyside including the city centre, Aintree, Kirkdale, Wirral and even areas in South Liverpool.

One local resident said their children were "hysterical" after being woken up scared whilst another added they "felt it in my chest" as they have "never felt so scared".

Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO they received many reports about the loud noise at around 12.14am.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was also called to investigate.

Officers were on patrol in the Wirral and Liverpool area to try and locate where the noise come from, but the force has since confirmed it was "not criminal".

But there is still mystery as to exactly where it came from and what exactly happened.

Many people reported seeing smoke from Cammell Lairds direction in Wirral, although this has not been confirmed and suggestions were made that it "could be fireworks".
