Police issue update after body of man in his 60s found in River Irwell

Police confirmed that the body of a man aged in his 60s was found in the River Irwell in Bury.

Emergency services rushed to the scene near Jubilee Way in the town centre just after 4pm yesterday afternoon (Monday) to a 'report of a concern for the welfare of a man in the water'. Tragically, a man's body was discovered.

Officers have confirmed that the man was aged in his 60s, but no further details have been released about him. Enquiries are ongoing into how the man got into the water, the force said.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. Pictures taken at the scene yesterday showed a footpath close to the water cordoned off.

Police officers were spotted guarding both ends. Forensics investigators could also be seen working in a woodland area close to the river.

In a statement issued this morning, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 4.05pm this afternoon (18 July 2022), police were called to a report of a concern for the welfare of a man in the water near Jubilee Way, Bury. Emergency services attended the scene and sadly a body of a man in his 60s was located.

"There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances. Enquiries are ongoing."

The tragedy was the latest in the waters in our region. Kalen Waugh tragically died after getting into difficulty in the water at Salford Quays on Saturday (July 16).

A major search operation was launched on Saturday evening, with the 16-year-old's body recovered later that night. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Last Thursday (July 14), a body was pulled from the River Irwell on the border of Castlefield and Salford. A large cordon was put in place surrounding the river banks near St George's Island as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious. Officers and council bosses have again repeated an urgent warning not to swim in open water, as the heatwave continues to bring sweltering temperatures of up to 38C.

Following Kalen's death, Detective Inspector Joanne Johnston, of Swinton CID, said: "We remind the public to avoid being tempted to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds. We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way. Think of your family - look out for your friends."
