Police issue photo appeal over collision that left cyclist with broken pelvis

Police probing a collision in which a champion cyclist was knocked from her bike have released an image of a truck and trailer they want to trace.

Cycling record holder Christina Mackenzie was knocked down whilst on a training ride near Kippen last month.

We told how the 45-year-old time trial specialist was hit by a car and trailer at around 5.05pm on the B822 – at the Kippen roundabout – on Tuesday, September 27.

The vehicle failed to stop, leaving Christina lying on the road in agony.

Now, road policing officers probing the incident have released a still image of a car towing a trailer and they are keen to speak to the driver as part of their investigation.

A black Ford Ranger towing a silver coloured Ifor Williams trailer was spotted near the location around the time of the collision.

Sergeant Jack Swindells, from Forth Valley’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries are ongoing into the full circumstances of what happened and we are keen to speak to anyone who has information that could help with our investigation.

“The black Ford Ranger and trailer were in the area at the time of the collision and we are keen to speak with the driver.

“We are asking anyone who saw the vehicle either before or after the crash to get in touch. Likewise, anyone with dash-cam footage that could assist should contact us.”

Christina, originally from Stornoway, was admitted to Forth Valley Royal Hospital following the incident.

Now, almost two weeks after arriving home from hospital to recover, Christina says she is still in excruciating pain.

This week she told the Observer: “I’m just trying to recover, but I’m very much still in pain.

“I live in a flat and I live alone so I’m pretty much housebound, because I can’t get up and down the stairs.”

She added: “It’s like lockdown all over again.

“It’s very frustrating.”

She is hopeful that the driver responsible will come forward and admit to the collision.

Christina – a member of Stirling Bike Club – was out on a training ride at the time of the crash in preparation for two races that coming weekend – the women’s veterans national championships and the Tour of the Trossachs.

She said she was approaching the roundabout from the direction of Stirling and indicated to turn right with her arm and moved to the right-hand side of the carriageway.

It was at that point that the vehicle came up on her right side, colliding with her before the trailer it was towing also hit her, knocking her onto the ground.

Christina holds the LEJOG and NC500 world records and is the national 12-hour time trial holder, among a long list of other achievements.

In May this year, we told how Christina was on the roads again for a second gruelling effort across the north of Scotland.

She made history last July when she completed the 839- mile cross-country journey from Land’s End to John o’Groats in 51 hours, five minutes and 27 seconds.

Anyone with information that could help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 2444 of Tuesday, September 27.
