Police issue M1 update as pictures show scale of 'serious' crash that closed road

Police have released more pictures of a crash which closed three lanes of the M1. It occured on the M1 southbound between junctions 28 and 29 and was described as a "serious collision."

Only one lane on the road remained open with police warning drivers to expect delays due to the crash. Police say a full investigation is due to take place - only minor injuries were reported as a result of the crash. However, pictures taken by Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit show the extent of the damage done to the cars involved.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said in a statement: "Full investigation to follow, fortunately only minor injuries."

All lanes reopened at around 7.33am after emergency services cleared the scene. National Highways East Midlands updated people via Twitter, saying: "All lanes are now open and the scene is now clear. Thanks for your patience. Have a safe onward journey."
