In a statement provided on Wednesday, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell on February 22nd in Omagh carried out a search within the vicinity of the Loughmacrory Road, Mountfield, County Tyrone earlier today, Wednesday May 3rd.
“An item of clothing was seized for further forensic examination. Enquiries are continuing.”
The senior PSNI officer, who was shot by masked gunmen in Omagh in February, was released from hospital last month almost two months after the attack.
DCI Caldwell was shot several times as he packed up equipment from football practice for his son, on 22 February. Fifteen arrests have been made by police investigating the shooting.
The PSNI has previously said they believe the shooting was carried out by the New IRA, which claimed responsibility in the aftermath of the incident.
