Police are investigating a house fire in Brixton after an elderly woman was left fighting for her life.

Thirty-five firefighters responded to the blaze on Ramillies Close on Sunday. Part of the first floor and roof of a terraced home were damaged by the fire.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman, aged 75, from the first floor. She was rushed to hospital by London Ambulance crews suffering from smoke inhalation.

Metropolitan Police said she remains in a life-threatening condition. Her next of kin have been informed.

A man, aged 72, left the home and was also taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. His condition is not life-threatening.

The Brigade was called at 12.08pm and the fire was under control by 2.50pm.

Fire crews from Clapham, Brixton, Wandsworth and West Norwood fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police.
