Police investigating death of two-year-old girl in North Mackay

Detectives are investigating the sudden death of a two-year-old girl in North Mackay.

The child's mother took her to Mackay Base Hospital about 8pm on Thursday night and the toddler was later declared dead, Detective Acting Inspector Chris Eaton said.

"As part of the investigation, we've identified that the child has been unwell in the days leading up to her death, and that will certainly form part of our investigations," he said.

"Under the direction of the coroner we'll also be looking at any care the child might have received in the last couple of days leading up to her untimely death."

Detective Acting Inspector Eaton would not comment on the child's condition before her death and said an autopsy is being carried out to establish the cause of death.

Jorja Chrichton, who was visiting the hospital when the girl was brought in, said a woman was carrying the girl and screaming that she was not breathing.

Ms Chrichton said the family of the girl was at the hospital and were distressed by what had happened.

She said the medical staff were calm and professional in their care for the girl and her family.

Investigations by the Mackay Child Protection Investigation Unit are continuing.
