Two people, including 11-year-old boy, killed in house fire in Lara, near Geelong

Floral tributes have been left for an 11-year-old boy and a man in his 70s, after they were killed in an intense house fire near Geelong on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the property on Forest Road North in the town of Lara about 4:45am.

After they extinguished the blaze, the bodies of 74-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy were found inside the house.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it is not believed to be suspicious.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the 10-year-old brother of the dead boy was able to escape from the house unharmed and was being cared for by his family.

"It's certainly not suspicious, it's a tragic accident that's occurred," he said.

"We're now in the process of preparing a report for the coroner.

"The mother [of the dead boy] is devastated. Probably can't describe the way she's feeling at the moment. We'd probably all feel the same way."

Detective Senior Sergeant Guthrie said police had ruled out an electrical fault as the cause of the "intense" fire.

Neighbour Peter Harvey said he could see the large flames from his backyard, and that it took firefighters about an hour to put the blaze out.

"For one of your neighbours to perish like that, it's horrible," he said.
