Emergency services are investigating at the scene of a “serious” plane crash in Essex.

The aircraft came down in a field near Mill Lane in Ongar at around 12.30pm on Tuesday, according to Essex Police.

Pictures circulating online show the tangled wreckage of the white plane, but it is not yet clear if there have been any injuries or casualties.

Officers remain at the scene, along with inspectors from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), who have described the crash as an "accident".

Essex Police have asked people to avoid the area while emergency crews work at the scene, and say they will provide updates on the condition of anybody on board the plane later.

A local told Metro: “There was a police car blocking off the road but nobody would tell us what happened. We couldn’t see the plane from where we are. It is a good job it didn’t hit any houses.”

Ongar is a small historic market town in Essex, 21 miles northeast of London.

In a post on Facebook, the village's St Mary's Church said: "Please join us in praying for everyone involved, for the emergency services responding and for all those in our local community who have been affected."

Det Ch Supt Morgan Cronin, of Essex Police, said: “This is a serious incident, and we understand it will cause concern in the local community.

“We are working closely with emergency service partners to respond and ensure the area is safe.

“There will be a visible police presence as we deal with this incident.

“We would ask residents to avoid Mill Lane while this work continues and thank them for their patience and understanding.”
