Police intervene as West Ham fans attacked in Sevilla ahead of Europa League last-16 tie

West Ham supporters were involved in ugly scenes on the eve of their Europa League last-16 tie with Sevilla after being targeted by Eintracht Frankfurt fans.

The German supporters were in Sevilla to watch their side take on Real Betis on Wednesday evening in their own Europa League match and clashed with the Spanish fans as well as the visiting English contingent.

On Wednesday afternoon a large group of tooled-up Eintracht Frankfurt followers were seen clashing with local police ahead of the match with Betis and trouble continued after their 2-1 win.

UEFA had moved Eintracht's match to Wednesday evening in order to avoid a clash with West Ham's trip to Sevilla but the supporters were not kept apart late in the evening.

Videos emerged on social media of Eintracht fans appearing to charge at Hammers supporters in various parts of the city and violent clashes between the two groups.

It appeared the incidents were instigated by the Eintracht groups who brandished giant sticks and were throwing bottles.

Eye witness reports detailed that Spanish police intervened with 'rubber bullets being fired into the crowd' in an attempt to deescalate the situation.

West Ham have already been sanctioned by UEFA twice this season for crowd trouble and will be hopeful to avoid further punishment from the European governing body following the latest incidents.

On the pitch there was some good news from David Moyes ahead of the tie with Declan Rice expected to be back in the West Ham team following a bout of illness.

Rice missed the Premier League trip to Liverpool on Saturday but has returned to training and travelled to Spain with his teammates. However, the on-form Jarrod Bowen has missed the trip through injury and remains a doubt for the league clash with Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
