Police intercept package allegedly containing millions of dollars worth of cocaine on arrival in Adelaide

A man has been charged with serious drug offences after police intercepted a package allegedly containing millions of dollars worth of cocaine in Adelaide.

SA Police announced on Thursday that officers from the Australian Border Force and the state's serious and organised crime branch (SOCB) intercepted the package — which they said contained five kilograms of cocaine — when it arrived in Adelaide earlier in December.

The cocaine, according to police, had a street value of $2 million.

Police said a 28-year-old man, who is not an Australian citizen, was arrested on December 16 and charged with attempting to traffic in a large commercial quantity of controlled drugs.

He was refused bail and appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on December 19, and was remanded in custody and will next appear in court in March, 2023.

"This seizure stopped a large amount of street deals of an extremely dangerous drug, which had the potential to cause significant community harm," SOCB Detective Superintendent Billy Thompson said.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and asked for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers online or on 1800 333 000.
