Police in pursuit of driver involved in running a red light, head-on crash

DAYS after a group of dirt bike riders wreaked havoc at Mayfield's Dangar Park, police are once again on the hunt for alleged offenders for flouting traffic laws, and putting themselves and others at risk.

About 4am on Saturday, June 20, emergency services were called to the intersection of Maitland Road and Hanbury Street in Mayfield following reports of a crash, not far from the Stag and Hunter hotel.

At the scene, police were told a man had allegedly conducted a burnout in a Holden Commodore before going through a red light and crashing head-on into another vehicle.

The driver allegedly removed the number plates from the car before leaving on foot.

A video and other images of the incident have appeared on social media where the driver has been lambasted for reckless driving.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 56-year-old woman, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a hand injury and later taken to the John Hunter Hospital for further assessment.

Both cars have been towed and Newcastle City Police are making inquiries, and have asked anyone with information or footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police minister Yasmin Catley has praised the swift actions of officers investigating a disruptive gathering at Mayfield a week or so earlier.

Operation Horizon police arrested two brothers and their mate at a Wallsend home on Friday and charged them with rioting at Dangar Park on June 14.

Officers vowed to knock on more doors after a group of up to 200 people and 40 illegal dirt bike riders converged on the skate park and surrounding streets, causing chaos.

The event was advertised by streetwear brand Bad Apples via social media and promised cash and merchandise giveaways.

Brothers Mark Di Stefano, 25, and Lochlan Di Stefano, 20, have each been charged with seven offences - rioting, using violence to cause fear, driving without a licence, having a stolen motor vehicle in their custody, and destroying or damaging property, among others.

Specialist officers from the Northern Region Operations Support Group backed Newcastle police as they raided the Wallsend property about 7am on Friday, June 19.

Officers also arrested a third man, 22-year-old Noah Steven Hewitt.

The charges against all three men are listed for mention in Newcastle Court on July 15.
