Police are warning everyone with a mobile phone about a text message that will leave people out of pocket. The scam text message is currently doing the rounds in Greater Manchester.
The message, which is being sent to phones, comes from a scammer posing as someone's son or daughter. It tells the person that they have got a new phone and upgraded before then asking them to text a new number
The scam then goes on to ask the victim to borrow some money and says they will pay it back when they get paid. Greater Manchester Police have now shared a post about the scam, saying that it leaves people 'out of pocket' as they never hear from them again.
Sharing a screenshot of the text message, GMP said: "People have started receiving text messages like this. They will then ask to lend some money from you, explaining they will pay you back when they get paid.
"Unfortunately after this you will never hear from them again and you will be out of pocket. Please be mindful about scam calls, text messages and emails."
According to the National Cyber Security Centre, most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages by forwarding it to 7726. This will allow providers to investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.
