Police hunting for driver after South Shields hit and run leaves cyclist in hospital

A person has been taken to hospital while police hunt for a car following a hit and run involving a cyclist.

Northumbria Police were called to reports of a collision on the junction of Harton Lane and King George Road, South Shields, at around 10.30am today (October 24) with an ambulance already on the scene.

North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) treated one patient for suspected minor injuries at the crash site before taking them to hospital - and officers are now keen to find the location of the car and its driver.

A spokesperson for the force said: "It was reported a male cyclist had been travelling along King George Road, towards South Shields, when, for reasons yet to be established, he has been struck by a car travelling on Harton Lane, which then left the area.

"Enquiries to trace the driver and establish the circumstances of the collision are ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police via their website, quoting log NP-20221024-0280.
