Police are hunting for a man riding an electric scooter who has been sexually assaulting lone women out walking and running on Hackney Marshes.
In the six months between March and August, 10 women have reported being approached by a man who has then “sexually touched” them over their clothing, said the Met police on Tuesday.
“On each occasion the suspect has been on an e-scooter at the time of the offence,” said a spokesperson.“It is alleged that the person responsible is targeting lone women and touching them over their clothing.”
The most recent offence was reported around a month ago, on August 7.
Detective Constable Lucy Dunwell from CID based at Hackney said police are aware Hackney residents are likely to be “fearful”, and urged people to keep a charged mobile phone with them when out and about.
“We recognise the concern this will cause amongst the local community,” said DC Dunwell.
“I understand that many who live, walk and run within this area will be fearful after hearing about these incidents and I assure you that we are working tirelessly to identify the man responsible.
“Our officers are working closely with Hackney Council to increase patrols in the area to provide reassurance and support. Anyone who visits the area is encouraged to keep their phone charged, remain aware of their surroundings and always call police in an emergency.
“We have issued images of a man that we would like to speak to in relation to this investigation.
“If you can help identify him then please call 101 or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers. In an emergency always dial 999. Similarly, if you have witnessed or been a victim of sexual assault then please come forward so you can be supported and the matter can be investigated.”
