Police hunt driver after hit-and-run left woman (63) seriously injured in city street

Police are trying to trace a hit-and-run driver who knocked down a woman in a city centre street – leaving her with a serious leg injury.

The 63-year-old was knocked down by a car in King Street on Saturday afternoon as she crossed the road near to the former McAree Brothers store – a one-way road – at around 2.20pm on Saturday.

The woman was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital with a serious leg injury.

Police are now looking to trace the driver of a grey coloured VW Golf that careered into her.

Sergeant Lee Walkingshaw said: “The Golf failed to stop and we believe it drove off in the direction of Corn Exchange Road.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to trace the driver.

“In particular, I’m asking for road users in the area at the time of the incident to check their dash-cams to see if they have footage that could help with our investigation to get in touch.

“In addition, if you saw what happened or where the car went afterwards and have not already spoken to officers then please contact us.”

The Observer understands that police continued to make enquiries at nearby businesses in the area on Monday.

Anyone who has information is being urged to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1766 of Saturday, January 14.

Residents expressed their shock on social media at the incident, which comes weeks after a 53-year-old Dunipace woman was killed in a suspected hit-and-run.

April Mitchell’s body was discovered at around 12.30am on Thursday, December 15, on the A872, at Avonside Drive in Dunipace, with the driver yet to be identified.

Of the King Street incident, one post read: “Hope that the lady is back on her feet soon.

“The good thing is if it had been parked nearby it wouldn’t have been going too fast or the lady would have suffered more injuries. Someone must know who the person is that did this. So callous and cruel to drive away.”

Another post read: “This is so sad.

“Hope she makes a good recovery and [the driver] has a heart and hands themselves in.”

One person said: “Hope the driver comes forward. Hope the woman has a speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile, another poster added: “Can’t believe that’s happened.

“I hope she will be alright.”

It also comes four months after champion cyclist Christina Mackenzie was struck by a vehicle – leaving her with a catastrophic pelvis injury.

The Cambusbarron time trial specialist was knocked down near Kippen on September 27.

Christina – a member of Stirling Bike Club – was out on a training ride at the time of the incident in preparation for two races that coming weekend – the women’s veterans national championships and the Tour of the Trossachs.

Police launched an investigation following the incident which took place on the B822 – at the Kippen roundabout.
