Police guarding beach car park as hundreds flock to the coast

As thousands flock to the coast to enjoy the heatwave, Merseyside Police officers have already been seen guarding car parks and beach entrances.

Sunny days in Merseyside are known to be plagued with a number of parking problems as cars rush to the coast to take advantage of our stunning beaches as temperatures soar to highs of 28°C. Now the police have been enlisted to help combat any parking problems and anti-social behaviour that may take place.

Police were seen manning the entrance to Formby beach as people descend on the golden sands that line the north Merseyside coast. The area often attracts a large number of people with there sometimes being issues with the visitors filling the town for a short amount of time.

As well as the increased presence from police, this week saw the confirmation that there will be new laws impacting visitors planning on going to the Sefton coast as the likes of disposable BBQs and golf to be banned. The new rules were approved at a full council meeting on Thursday and are currently in effect.

A ban relating to alcohol is not, according to the report, designed to be a full ban, but only for when people have been told to stop drinking or if drinking is being done in an “anti-social" manner. The order requires that people in the designated areas hand over any alcohol in their possession when asked to do so.

Other measures in the lengthy public space protection order include a ban on playing golf, large gatherings, releasing balloons, fireworks or lanterns, holding certain events, staying in tents and caravans without written permission and “climbing on structures such as Southport pier.”

Despite the introduction of the order, Formby beach is owned by the National Trust which has meant that the Trust has previously asked people to not light BBQs or fires in the area for a number of years.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning across Merseyside from Sunday, July 17 to Tuesday, July 19, with a red warning in place as you travel further inland due to the climbing temperatures.
