The road closures on both carriageways are now in the process of being removed, though there is still heavy traffic in the area. Drivers are being urged to avoid the route if they can.
In a statement, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 2.30am on Thursday 19 May police were called to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge on the M56 between junction 12 and 14.
