Police officers called to reports of pedestrians on the motorway found two teenagers laid down on the central reservation looking at the stars. The stargazing teens were a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man.
Both displayed what officers described as a 'poor attitude' when they were removed from the centre of the M1 in South Yorkshire in the early hours of Friday (April 8). This was after officers had to stop all traffic on the motorway at junction 34 at Meadowhall, near Sheffield, at around 3.30am.
South Yorkshire Police Operations Support twitter feed said: "We were called to reports of pedestrians on the motorway. When we arrived, having stopped all traffic, we found two young males laid on the central reservation ‘stargazing’.
"Both removed, poor attitudes challenged and issued with tickets... The males were aged 17 and 18."
Both of the reckless astronomers were issued fines for being on the motorway. It is of course against the law for pedestrians to be on motorways or slip roads except in an emergency.
People on twitter were aghast to read about the pair's behaviour. Richard How wrote: "It does make you wonder just who ties their laces for them in the morning." John P wrote: "Unbelievable that they can think that was acceptable."
