Police find drugs stashed in car wheel in Metrolink car park

Police have found a container of drugs stashed in a car wheel in a Metrolink stop car park - cheekily joking the owner could contact police if they wanted them back.

Officers from the transport unit of Greater Manchester Police were deployed to Abraham Moss Metrolink station this afternoon, October 10, using stop and search powers and performing weapons sweeps to target serious and violent crime and the causes of those offences.

However, during their visit, police found slightly more than they were expecting when officers discovered a quantity of drugs stashed by the wheel of a car. A picture from the scene appeared to show a small plastic orange container resting in the spokes of the wheel of a silver Ford.

Officers posted on the Cheetham & Crumpsall Police Twitter page about the discovery and the action taken at the tram stop. The post read: "This afternoon GMP Transport Unit deployed at Abraham Moss Metrolink station, targeting Serious/Violent Crime offenders and the drivers of SVC. During a sweep, we located drugs stashed in a wheel arch in the car park - owner can come forward if they want them back... #VRU"

The VRU is the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit, a scheme run by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority since 2019 to try and reduce violence, particularly knife crime, among young people. It sees experts from health, education, police, criminal justice and community organisations work together to tackle the underlying causes of serious violence across the region.

Over the weekend, the unit was working in Salford to create the third and final mural trying to encourage young people to steer clear of violence for a better future.
