Police investigating two horrifying incidents in south Manchester on Monday have confirmed they do not believe they were linked.
Moss Side was rocked by a shooting shortly after midnight on Monday morning on Claremont Road in which a man, aged 20, tragically died. Hours later, a knife brawl broke out on Roseberry Street which saw multiple people injured.
As reported by the M.E.N. yesterday, Greater Manchester Police were investigating if the two incidents were connected. However, Det Supt David Meeney has now confirmed that police now believe the violent attacks were not linked.

“We continue to investigate two incidents from the early hours of August 15 whereby a number of males have suffered injuries and sadly a young man has lost his life,” Detective Superintendent David Meeney from the City of Manchester District, said. "These investigations are being progressed by the GMP Major Incident Team.
“At present we do not believe these incidents are linked but we remain open minded as we continue to follow lines of enquiry. Four men remain in custody in relation to the assault on Roseberry Street and we continue to support the family of the young man who has passed away.”
Also today, GMP confirmed that it will use Section 60 powers in parts of the Moss Side and Whalley Range areas until 4am tomorrow. The temporary additional powers allow us to stop and search people, and also give officers the power to disperse anyone from the area they believe may cause harm or distress to others.
The move comes because GMP believes it has ‘information people may have weapons in the area, or there is information that there could be violence’. Those factors, it says justifies ‘the use of these powers’ which the force recognises ‘can cause concern and can seem excessive’.
More officers will patrol the areas under the Section 60 order, as well, Det Supt Meeney added. He continued: “We will have more officers in the area in the coming days and as part of this powers under Section 60 of Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 have been authorised to support the response to protecting the local community. This is not something that is considered lightly and will be kept under review."
