Man fatally shot by police in Sydney's south-west in knives-wielding confrontation with two officers

Police investigating shooting of Yagoona man after domestic violence reports.

A 29-year-old man has died after being shot by police in Sydney's south-west early, in what they say was a violent confrontation with two officers.

It has been revealed that Hilal Barbour was the subject of an apprehended violence order.

A critical incident investigation is underway after the incident in William Street, Yagoona, just before 9.00am on Sunday.

Police said a female and male officer were responding to reports of a domestic violence-related incident at a home following a call to triple-0.

"What we know thus far is that there was a domestic violence incidence occurring with multiple members of the household," South West Metropolitan Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said.

"He had armed himself with a shovel and he was threatening members of his own family."

Barbour was wielding two large knives when police arrived, Assistant Commissioner Smith said, adding that the female officer stumbled and fell to the ground during the confrontation after he was tasered.

"Her falling to the ground was followed by the male person swinging wildly with both knives, trying to strike her.

"What I can describe as what followed was an attempt by this male to either wound or kill the male police officer, who then deployed his police service weapon and fired three rounds."

He said the first two rounds did not have an impact.

"The third round was fired before the offender was disabled."

Barbour received first aid for his injuries before the arrival of paramedics. He was then taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he later died.

Assistant Commissioner Smith said it was too early in the investigation to say whether Barbour was targeting the female officer.

"It is without a doubt frightening, the individual tried to stab and slash the female officer, she lost her footing, she fell backwards, he continued the attack.

"His focus was then momentarily on the male officer."

Both officers were injured, sustaining superficial wounds.

A critical incident team with officers from State Crime Command's homicide squad will now investigate what happened, including the discharge of a police firearm.

"Everything will be looked at in this critical incident, mental health will be one of them," Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

It was the second fatal police shooting in Sydney in a week, with a 40-year-old man shot in Auburn in Sydney's south-west last Thursday.
