Police crack down on foldable number plates, three held in Chennai

CHENNAI: Traffic Police arrested three men and seized 32 foldable number plates used by bike racers and chain snatchers to escape from being caught.

In a drive conducted at ECR, Elliot's beach and LB Road, police seized nearly 300 vehicles plying without proper number plates. The arrest comes after police came across several incidents where drag racers and miscreants were riding without proper number plates. Investigation revealed that the offenders use foldable number plates to get away with their illegal activities.

Meanwhile, the city police seized 60 vehicles that had foldable hangers attached with a magnet on the vehicle.

Based on the information, St Thomas Mount traffic police searched a shop at the railway station road and seized 18 number plates.

M Sarathkumar, 29, of St Thomas Mount and S Sukumaran, 25, of Alandur who run a shop were arrested under sections 417 of IPC (punishment for cheating) and 190 of Motor Vehicles Act.

Similarly, Pondy Bazaar traffic police seized 14 such plates from a shop. The shop owner, A Praveen Kumar, 29 of Nungambakkam, was arrested too.

The city police warned shopkeepers against selling such accessories.
