Police confirm two pensioners dead following incidents in Greenock and Gourock

TWO pensioners have died following a pair of tragic incidents in Greenock and Gourock.

Ambulances, incident response vehicles and police cars rushed to separate incidents on Cardwell Road in Gourock and Eldon Street in Greenock just before 9am.

Police say neither of the deaths are being treated as suspicious and that a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal in relation to each of the incidents.

It is understood that despite the proximity of the two incidents, which lead some locals to initially believe they were linked, the two tragedies are unrelated.

Officers were called to the first incident at around 8:40am following a report of an injured man on Cardwell Road.

After police arrived on the scene, a 79-year-old man was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where he later died.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.40am on Friday, 11 October, 2024 we were called to a report of an injured man in Cardwell Road, Greenock.

“Officers attended and the 79-year-old man was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where he later died.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Officers were dispatched to the second incident at around 9am after police received a report of an unresponsive man on Eldon Street.

Emergency services attended to try and assist the 80-year-old, but he was sadly pronounced dead.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9am on Friday, October 11, 2024, we received a report of an unresponsive man in Eldon Street, Greenock.

Police taped off sections of both streets while they and other emergency services attempted to assist the two men.
