Police confirm identity of man found dead on M80 motorway after 'car broke down'

Police have confirmed the identity of a motorist who was found dead under a bridge on the M80 motorway on Thursday.

John Barr Johnston, 47, from Glasgow, died at Longcroft, Bonnybridge on September 15. The incident happened around 12.10am when police were called to Station Road, underneath the M80 overbridge.

It was reported earlier this week that police believe John was driving his silver Ford Fiesta northbound at the Haggs junction in Stirling at around 10.40pm on Wednesday night before it broke down. It is thought he then stopped on the hard shoulder near to Station Road, before his body was discovered hours later.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed an investigation has started but said the death is 'not being treated as suspicious.'

A statement said: "Enquiries are ongoing however the death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
