Police chased driver who overtook them at nearly 100mph on A610 in Kimberley

A drink driver tore along a main road near Kimberley with police in pursuit after he overtook them at nearly 100mph. Jason Gordon was estimated to be travelling at 98mph, in a 50mph zone, after patrolling officers spotted him overtake at that speed along the A610, near to the junction of the M1.

Nottingham Crown Court heard on Tuesday (December 20) unlicenced driver Gordon, who was more than two times the legal drink drive limit, went around a bollard, drove on the wrong side of the road, before slowing down for a gritter lorry.

But rather than stopping completely, he carried on driving dangerously - clearing the lorry, then drawing to a stop, with a police officer going to his window. He drove off again, potentially endangering police - who he ignored completely, said Recorder Stuart Sprawson, who sent Gordon to jail.

He drove on, ignoring the illuminated lights of police, but eventually stopped and was arrested. In interview, Gordon claimed he had only had four cans of lager the previous evening and the last one an hour before driving.

A provisional licence holder, who should not have been driving on January 9 this year, Recorder Sprawson jailed him for a total of 12 months for dangerous driving and drink driving, and added three months consecutively for further offences of disqualified driving and drink-driving on a stolen moped in August - when on bail and subject to an interim driving ban from the January 9 offences.

Concurrent sentences, which were lower, were imposed for separate offences, as well a licence endorsement for having no insurance. A driving ban of of three-and-half years was imposed.

Mitigating Raglan Ashton, said 31-year-old Gordon, of Mansfield Road, Arnold, had turned to drink after his relationship ended. He drank and took drugs and ended up homeless.

But he now has his own accommodation where there is support and help.
