Police caution young men for jumping into flooding River Murray on inflatable mattresses

Two men who jumped into the River Murray on inflatable mattresses have been cautioned by SA Police.

Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said the two young men were caught on the river near Ponde.

"Compounding that issue, I understand they had also been drinking prior to going in, so really stupid decision to these two lads," he said.

"There are just so many risks out there at the moment, it is really not worth it."

On Tuesday, the state government announced a ban on swimming, boating, as well as motorised and manual watercraft on the River Murray between the New South Wales-Victoria border and Wellington.

As well as being cautioned, Assistant Commissioner Parrott said the men were provided with education on river safety.

"There are so many hazards out there that people don't understand and the river flow is so high and people don't understand it, hence the reason that we have a really strong education focus first in relation to this issue.

"We don't want people getting into trouble and these two blokes came in really close."

The two young men are the only people to have been cautioned since the ban came into effect.

The state government is expected to give another update on river modelling and flows this afternoon.
