Police called to TUI 'flight from hell' after plane diverted to different airport

A TUI passenger has told of how holidaymakers endured a 'flight from hell' after their plane 'bounced' off the runway and was diverted to a different airport.

Police were later called as passengers became 'abusive' waiting on the grounded aircraft.

Passengers were on board a flight from Cape Verde to Bristol - but ended up in a 12-hour delay ordeal, Birmingham Live reports.

The plane was initially delayed for several hours before take-off.

The flight later descended to 800ft before ascending once more, but passengers on board said they did touch down on the Bristol runway before flying off again.

Passengers were also stuck on board the plane for two-hours on the runway at Birmingham as passengers became irate and the airport police were called.

The aircraft was inspected to see if it could fly back to Bristol on June 8. But the long wait led to people complaining. One man was escorted off the plane.

While a pregnant woman needed medical attention as paramedics treated her onboard. Passengers were then told they would not be flying back to Bristol and left off the plane to be bussed back to Bristol instead.

TUI said the plane was diverted from Bristol due to "weather conditions", but passenger James Hendy disputes this.

The 39-year-old, from Oldbury, said: "It was nothing to do with weather conditions. There was no adverse weather conditions. It was clear. And if so why did we bounce off the ground?

"It was classed as a safety issue. And we were 12 hours late to Bristol as we were landed at Birmingham. Not acceptable. Flight from hell - yes.

"A three-hour delay in Sal, then diverted to Birmingham from Bristol. Police came onto the flight to remove a member of public and a woman need medical treatment.

"Two-hours on a plane at Birmingham then two-hours in the terminal waiting for baggage only to get onto coach again to Bristol for another two-hours. And TUI are only offering compensation for a three-hour delay."

Another passenger said: "We absolutely bounced off the runway back into the sky, causing a system error. Before we landed, the captain said it would be bouncy due to the tarmac length. We took a shortcut, I've flown in and out of Bristol plenty and I was thinking 'where are we going?'

"We went down and the plane honestly felt like it smashed the tarmac, then we went back up into the air. The captain announced this was normal and he was going to try again.

"We did a big turn and then he announced a system error had occurred," she added. "Honestly, it was scary. I've landed in Canada in ice and snow, but this was 'bounce, bounce'."

A TUI spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that TOM245 from Sal, Cape Verde, to Bristol was diverted to Birmingham on June 7 due to weather conditions at Bristol Airport. Our crew offered all possible support during the flight before everyone was safely disembarked.

"We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers onboard. The safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew is always our highest priority and we’d like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding."

It is understood all customers were proactively contacted with a link on how to claim their compensation which is calculated based on flight delay time.
