Police called to scene of alleged stabbing at underage GAA game in Tyrone

Police have attended the scene of an alleged stabbing incident at an underage GAA match in Tyrone this evening.

It's understood that one man has been detained after police were called to GAA grounds in the Cookstown area on Thursday evening.

It has been confirmed that one person was taken to hospital after the incident.

Belfast Live reports that a man was attacked by another male, who was allegedly wielding a knife, during an underage Championship semi-final in Tyrone on Thursday evening.

Video footage captured by a spectator shows a man being detained and led away by officers.

The alleged stabbing took place during an under-16 Championship semi-final between Cookstown Fr Rocks and Fintona Pearses.

Cookstown Fr Rocks released a statement on Thursday evening confirming that a "very serious incident" took place.

"Following a very serious incident at Padráig O'Cuilinn Pairc this evening during an Under 16 Championship match.

"Our thoughts are with the individuals impacted by it.

"The Committee will now work to ensure that children and young people who witnessed this disturbing and very serious incident have the support and assistance that they require in the coming days.

"The club will be making no further comment on the matter."

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland ambulance confirmed to the Belfast Telegraph that one person was taken to hospital.

“The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 9.03pm following reports of an incident in the Convent Road area of Cookstown on Thursday.

“NIAS despatched an emergency crew to the incident.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, the patient was taken to Antrim Area Hospital."

There are no further details at this time.
