Police called to Leeds Farnley Academy toilet protests over 'behaviour concerns'

West Yorkshire Police rushed to the scene of pupils protesting outside a Leeds school following 'concerns about the behaviour'.

Police said they received calls at about 10.20am on Monday (February 27) raising concerns about demonstrators who were at the common outside the school grounds in Chapel Lane. Hundreds of pupils had been protesting the secondary school's new toilet policy, which has been implemented by the Gorse Academies Trust, for the second day following a protest on Friday.

The new policy requires that all but one of the toilets are locked during lesson time, and pupils have to get a note to enter the sole open toilet where a member of staff stands guard. Disgruntled parents and pupils are "disgusted" with the policy which they believe is "taking away their human rights".

Headmaster Chris Stokes has hit out at "abhorrent comments" from adults which he claims includes "threats of violence towards members of staff, myself included". This morning, pupils waved banners which said 'Human Rights' and 'It's our right to have a s***', along with chants of 'human rights'.

Pupils have told Leeds Live there were three police cars outside the school and officers were guarding the school gates.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "From 10.21am today, police received calls raising concerns about the behaviour of some members of a group protesting outside Farnley Academy, in Chapel Lane, New Farnley.

"Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team attended to monitor the demonstration and liaise with the school. Those involved left at about noon and officers remained in the area to provide reassurance."
