A man has received minor injuries when Blues and Magpies fans were involved in a heated altercation at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

A Carlton fan appeared to throw a punch towards the head of a Collingwood fan after the match, as other spectators attempted to stand between the two men.

Only one MCG security guard can been seen during the altercation, as more Carlton fans hurled abuse at the Collingwood supporter from rows further up.

"I don't know where the bloody security is, mate, it's ridiculous," one fan can be heard saying.

"You and your kids shouldn't have to put up with this shit."

The altercation happened after Collingwood beat Carlton by one point in the final round of the season, robbing the Blues of a rare chance of playing finals.

The Blues and the Magpies have a long and heated rivalry, which Carlton legend Mark Maclure told ABC Sport on Sunday was one of pure hatred

Victoria Police said all parties involved in the altercation had so far refused to make a statement.

"Police were called to an altercation between two groups of people in the aisles of the stands at the MCG post-match Sunday evening," a police statement read.

"Officers spoke with the parties involved after it appears one man received minor injuries.

"Detectives are investigating, however those involved declined to make a statement at this stage."

Anyone with information or anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
