Police bring in more orders in East Leeds after serious knife attack

Increased stop and search powers are being kept in place in a part of Leeds for a further 24 hours after a man was seriously injured after being stabbed outside The Springs shopping centre. The man is in hospital and continuing to receive treatment for his injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Senior officers in Leeds have authorised the continued use of Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to detect and deter the carrying of offensive weapons in east Leeds after they were called to the stabbing at 3.44pm yesterday (Friday, December 9).

The temporary order covers an area of east Leeds including Harehills, East End Park, Whinmoor, Gipton, Temple Newsam Park and Colton. The order originally came into effect at 5pm on Friday for an initial 24 hours and has now been extended for a further 24 hours until 5pm tomorrow.

Detectives from Leeds District CID are continuing to carry out enquiries into the incident.Section 60 gives police officers the power to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without them having to have their usual grounds to suspect each person searched.

It follows a detailed assessment of the need for continued use of the additional powers to prevent any further serious violence and help to keep communities safe.

Yesterday, Superintendent Russ Hughes of Leeds District Police, said: “This order has been put in place following a violent assault in Leeds today which is being investigated by Leeds District CID.

“These additional search powers give officers an increased ability to stop those involved in carrying weapons, as part of our efforts to disrupt deter and bring to justice those who involve themselves in this type of criminal behaviour.

“Residents will see extra police patrols and I hope communities are reassured by the actions we are taking.”
