Victoria Police are searching for an “amorous couple” who are being accused of setting off a sprinkler system that caused flooding and chaos at two Melbourne train stations last week.
At about 10.40pm on Thursday, October 10, Melbourne’s Central and Flagstaff stations — which were busy with concertgoers leaving Olivia Rodrigo‘s GUTS Tour — were evacuated due to flooding caused by a triggered sprinkler system.
Although initial reports believed that vandalism was the reason behind the tripped triggers, it has been alleged that it was a cheeky couple who went under a staircase that might’ve caused the flood.
While addressing the media on Wednesday, October 16, Minister for Transport Infrastructure of Victoria Danny Pearson said “It would appear that an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged a sprinkler,” which led to the shutdown of the two city loop stations.
“There was extensive flooding. Metro will be investigating these matters further and police are investigating,” he said, per 9News.
“Perhaps a stairwell may not be an appropriate place to find yourself in after dinner.”
Following the incident, Police released photos of a man and a woman who could with their investigations into “criminal damages”.
Authorities claim the couple accessed the stairwell connecting platforms at Melbourne Central Station and alleged they damaged a water pipe and fire sprinkler at about 10.40pm.
They also said the couple were not at the scene following the flood.
“The delays affected big crowds trying to get home from the Olivia Rodrigo concert at Rod Laver Arena,” police stated at the time, per the publication.
As of writing, investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
