Police action at tram stop as dangerous car meets becoming 'a convention'

Commuters have described car meets at a Nottinghamshire tram stop as being 'like a convention' as work was stepped up to deter incidents.

Nottinghamshire Police officers were drafted in after growing concerns over anti-social behaviour at the Toton Lane tram stop and park and ride.

Issues have included frequent car meets which people in the area have described as 'dangerous' and officers have now taken part in patrols and spoken to drivers.

One resident who is aware of the issues in the area is 78-year-old John Collins, who said: "It’s not really interfered with us.

“I hope they’re not doing [car meets] - if they are, they want catching.

“We haven’t heard anything. We’ve gone by and obviously they park up there.

“We are aware of things going off - we don't get involved or we’ve not come across it. We are aware that things do go off.”

One resident who asked to remain anonymous told Nottinghamshrie Live: "We live near the main road and there’s a lot of traffic - you can tell with the sound of the car and you can tell what they’re doing.

“They’re racing up and down Stapleford Lane.

“To be honest with you the other night I was thinking to myself that it’s only a matter of time until one of them has a nasty crash.

“That’s how it feels because they hammer down at such a pace.

“I only noticed it because it was late at night - it’s a definite impact.

“My husband notices it more - he walks around the tram as there’s a footpath around it.

“He notices it more because they’re all up there - it’s like a convention.

“It seems to be late at night - I don’t know what they can do about it to be honest.

“It’s difficult to say - it’s like an accident waiting to happen.”

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed they have taken 'positive action' after receiving complaints about anti-social behaviour at the Toton Lane tram stop.

Inspector Mike Ebbins, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers on proactive patrols have attended the area, spoken to drivers and given advice to prevent further issues from occurring. We will continue to target this area and would urge people organising and attending these sort of events to act responsibly and within the law and think about the consequences and impact of their actions on our local residents.

“We understand people’s passion for their vehicles and desire to come together but cannot condone antisocial behaviour impacting on our local people and dangerous and irresponsible driving on our roads which puts the safety of other road users at risk.

“My team of officers will continue to work closely with Nottingham Express Transit (NET) to tackle this issue and take appropriate action against those responsible for antisocial behaviour. Those driving antisocially may find themselves prosecuted and having their cars seized.”

Anyone who has information or concerns about car meetings is urged to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, or only in an emergency, call 999.
