A new leak involving "Pokémon Winds and Waves" has detailed what to expect from the new type combinations that will be introduced to the game, especially with the upcoming starter trio introduced by the franchise.
Based on how the current competitive meta works, it could turn out to be one of the strongest type pairings Game Freak has ever introduced.
'Pokémon Winds and Waves' Leak New Type Combo
The information comes from Centro Leaks on X, which has previously been a reliable source of early Pokémon information ahead of official announcements. The leak centers around Pombon, the Fire-type starter in "Pokémon Winds and Waves," and specifically its final evolution.
According to the source, Pombon's final form will be a dual Fire and Fairy type, a combination that has never appeared in any mainline "Pokémon" game before.
The Fairy type itself was only introduced back in Generation VI with "Pokémon X and Y" in 2013, making it the newest type in the franchise. Before that, the last new type introduction came in Generation II back in 1999, when Steel and Dark were added to the game.
With 14 years separating those two events, new types are historically rare in Pokemon, which makes this particular leak all the more significant if it proves accurate.

Fire + Fairy Type Is Going to be 'Very OP'
Fairy type is widely regarded by the "Pokémon" community as one of the strongest types in the game, consistently regarded as second only to Steel in terms of overall defensive and offensive viability. Fire, meanwhile, is already a solid offensive type in part because it is super effective against Steel, which removes one of Fairy's biggest offensive obstacles.
Combining the two types on a single Pokémon would also preserve Fairy's immunity to Dragon-type moves, a trait that already makes pure Fairy types difficult to deal with in competitive play, said ComicBook Gaming. Stack that on top of Fire's offensive coverage, and the result is a Pokémon with very few meaningful weaknesses and a wide range of tools available in battle.

The leak also notes that the other two starters in "Pokémon Winds and Waves" are rumored to become Grass and Ground for the Grass starter, and Water and Psychic for the Water starter.
Water and Psychic is considered a reasonable pairing given how strong Water type already is, though neither combination is expected to rival Fire and Fairy on paper.
What to Expect From Pombon?
Pombon's final typing still needs to be viewed with caution since nothing has been confirmed by Nintendo or Game Freak. Even if the type combination is accurate, the actual competitive viability of the Pokémon will depend heavily on its base stats, movepool, and ability, all of which remain unknown at this stage.
Starters tend to receive solid stats overall, so a Fire and Fairy type with competitively tuned numbers could realistically become one of the dominant picks in "Pokémon Winds and Waves" from the moment the game launches.
"Pokémon Winds and Waves" is set to release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, though a specific launch date has not been confirmed by the publisher as of press time.
