Pokémon Designer James Turner Joins The Pokémon Company International

Veteran Pokémon designer James Turner has returned to the franchise in a new creative role.

Turner announced that he has joined The Pokémon Company International as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design. He shared the news on social media, writing that it felt great to be "working in the world of Pokémon again" with a "lovely group of people."

He also said he was excited about what comes next. His return comes as the Pokémon franchise prepares for the release of Pokémon Winds and Waves, which is scheduled for 2027.

Turner has worked on the Pokémon franchise across several generations.

His early career included work on Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. He helped finalize the design of Shadow Lugia for Pokémon XD, one of the most recognizable Pokémon designs from the GameCube era.

Turner later joined Game Freak, where he contributed to character and Pokémon design. His credited creations include Vanillite, Golett, Vullaby and Phantump. He also worked on the designs of other Pokémon, including Buzzwole.

He served as art director for Pokémon Sword and Shield, helping shape the visual direction of the Galar region. His work extended beyond the mainline games, including illustrations for the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Turner has contributed artwork for cards featuring Pokémon such as Pansear, Duskull, Dusclops, Dusknoir and Pikachu ex. His work can be viewed through Serebii's Pokémon TCG artist archive.

Turner's designs have sometimes divided fans. Some players have criticized the unusual proportions or concepts behind certain Pokémon, while others have welcomed the more unconventional approach. His work has nevertheless become an identifiable part of the franchise's modern visual history.

What Will James Turner Work On?

Turner's new role is with The Pokémon Company International, not Game Freak. That distinction is important.

Game Freak remains the primary developer of the mainline Pokémon games, while The Pokémon Company International manages the franchise's business and brand activities outside Japan. Turner's exact responsibilities have not been announced in detail.

The new position does not confirm that he is working directly on Pokémon Winds and Waves or the next mainline Pokémon game. It also does not confirm that he will design new Pokémon for an upcoming title.

His work could involve international brand design, promotional artwork, merchandise, events or other creative projects connected to the wider Pokémon franchise. Those possibilities have not been officially specified, so fans will have to wait for more information.

The announcement has already prompted discussion about whether Turner could influence Pokémon's future visual direction. Some fans are hoping to see more of his distinctive artwork across games, cards and merchandise.

Others have pointed out that Pokémon's creative identity is shaped by many artists and designers, rather than one individual. Turner's appointment is significant because of his history with the franchise, but it should not be treated as confirmation of any specific Gen 10 development plans.

For now, fans can look forward to seeing how his new role develops as Pokémon Winds and Waves moves toward its 2027 release.
