The potential for further unrest in Papua New Guinea has forced the PNG Hunters' homecoming match against the Townsville Blackhawks to be relocated.

After an extended period away due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, the Hunters were eagerly anticipating their first match in Port Moresby for three years but it will now be played on the Gold Coast.

The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) decided to move the match after expert advice warned of the potential for more unrest following violent clashes during recent national elections.

"It's important to note that this decision is for this game only, and we're really hopeful the games that are scheduled to be played at the National Football Stadium in PNG later this month can proceed," QRL chief executive Rohan Sawyer said in a statement.

"We feel for the players, management and staff, as well as the fans in PNG who were so eagerly awaiting the return of the Hunters.

"We'll continue to monitor the situation and do everything possible to ensure the Hunters have the opportunity to get back home and play the game they love in front of their valued fans and sponsors."

The Hunters currently sit 12th on the 14-team Queensland Cup ladder after 15 matches.
